Miniature portrait of Peter set in a gilt metal frame, based on a now lost 1717 portrait of Peter by Nicolas de Largillière (1656-1746), undoubtedly painted during the Tsar’s visit to Versailles in that year, shows the emperor in armor with a cloak held closed by a jeweled clasp and wearing a crown of laurel, circa 1800 (?)

Gouache on unidentified ground, probably mammalian, affixed to card with an undetermined adhesive, cabochon cut glass, card, printed paper, woven fabric (cotton or silk?), gilt metal frame. Miniature unframed: 2 7/16 x 1 7/8 in. (6.2 x 4.7 cm). Frame, not including suspension ring: 2 3/4 x 2 in. (7 x 5.2 cm)
